Stockbridge, Hampshire

Location

Stockbridge is in the west of the county of Hampshire, at the ancient crossing of the River Test on the road from London via Basingstoke to Salisbury (the modern A30) and the West Country beyond. The town is situated in the west of the parish of the same name. It is about fifteen miles east of Salisbury, eight miles south of Andover and Winchester lies 10 miles to the east south east. Stockbridge also gave its name to a much larger Civil Registration District, which extended to the Wiltshire border. See GENUKI.

Parish Church

The Parish (CofE) Church is St Peter, Stockbridge. The remains of the Old St Peter's building can be seen here on Google Street View. The replacement building, built in 1866-7, can be seen here on Google Street View.

Parish Registers

"A History of the County of Hampshire: Volume 4" (pub 1911) indicates four early registers as follows

the first containing baptisms and burials from 1663 to 1768 and marriages from 1663 to 1754; the second, a transcript of the first, containing baptisms and burials from 1698 to 1812 and marriages from 1698 to 1754; the third containing marriages from 1754 to 1794, and the fourth those from 1794 to 1811.

Adjacent (Pre 1832) Parishes

The parish of Stockbridge is bounded to the north east by Leckford and a detached portion of Kings Somborne; to the south east lies Little Somborne. To the south west is Kings Somborne, in the west it touches Houghton and to the north west is Longstock.
