In the 1860 census, 23 year old Henry Alves May was living in the home of his cousin Elijah Herd (Heard) in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California and recordedly working as a farm laborer. By the 1880 census, he was working as a miner in El Dorado County, California.

On the 5th of July in 1896, Henry was listed in the California Voter Registration of El Dorado County as a farmer.
