Montgomery Co., NC
History
Montgomery County was formed from Anson County in 1779 and was named in honor of General Richard Montgomery, who had been a distinguished British soldier for 16 years. He sold his commission in 1772 and came to America. He soon became a staunch supporter of the rights of the colonies. When the Continental Congress at Philadelphia commissioned officers for the army with General Washington in 1774, Richard Montgomery was among those commissioned a general. He was killed leading his men in the attack on Quebec.In 1841, that part of Montgomery County west of the Pee Dee River became Stanly County.

Montgomery County is bordered by Randolph, Moore, Richmond, Stanly and Davidson counties.
