Northampton Co., NC
History
Northampton County is located along the fall line between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions of North Carolina. The first natives were the Tuscarora and Meherrin tribes. Yet, most of the tribes fled the area as European immigrants came to present-day Northampton. The English, Scotch-Irish, the Scottish, and French Huguenot settlers were the earliest Europeans to the region at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The Roanoke River that moves through Northampton provided the Native Americans and early settlers a pathway to trade with the surrounding areas; in addition, the lush soil of the region of the Roanoke River Valley attracted many immigrants.Source: Northampton County History
The county was formed in 1741 from Bertie County and named for James Compton, earl of Northampton. It is bordered in part by the state of Virginia. In 1759 parts of Northampton County, Bertie County, and Chowan County were combined to form Hertford County.
