Narrative

A baptism record for Thomas Rees/Reeves has yet to be identified.

The marriage of Thomas and Jane has yet to be confirmed. It is possible his is the marriage recorded at Newchurch, IoW on 30 November 1810 between Thomas REEVES and Jane SWEATMAN

Known children of Thomas and Jane are
  1. Ann, b c1816, married Uriah BIGGS
  2. Emma, b c 1817, married Henry COTTON
  3. Daniel, b c 1821
  4. Lavinia, b c 1832
Probable children of Thomas and Jane
  1. Thomas, b c 1815
  2. Fanny, b c1825
Probable daughter Fanny appears on the 1841 census, along with Daniel and Lavinia. All three are recorded with the surname Reeves, as part of the household of Thomas Reeves.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Thomas appears as a head of household along with Jane (age 50). Sharing the same dwelling on Dores Row are Uriah BIGGS (age 20), Ann BIGGS (25) with Edward (age 3), Samuel (1) and George(4), and also Henry & Emma COTTON (both aged 20) and Thomas (age 1). Three dwellings away also on Dores Row is the household of Thomas Reeves who is suspected to be the son of this Thomas.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Thomas appears as head of household along with his wife Jane (age 60), son Daniel (30) and daughter Lavinia (19). Living as part of the same household are Henry COTTON (son-in-law, age 32), daughter Emma COTTON (32) and their children Thomas (12) and Henry (9).

A decade later and neither Thomas nor his wife Jane have been identified on the 1861 census. Their daughter Lavinia is shown as a visitor in the household of Thomas & Emma COTTON.

There is some evidence to link this family group to the REEVES surname.
  • As previously noted, on the 1841 census Daniel, Fanny & Lavinia appear with the surname REEVES as part of the household of Thomas Reeves.
  • In 1840, when registering the births of Samuel BIGGS and Thomas COTTON, the maiden names of both Ann and Emma is recorded as REEVES
  • In 1841, when registering the birth of Henry Thomas COTTON, the maiden names of Emma is recorded as REEVES
There are no strongly matching death registrations for Thomas in the name of REES. There is however the death registration for a Thomas REEVES in 1852 (aged 66) which strongly matches this individual. Does anybody have a copy of the Death Certificate for this Thomas REEVES? It would be informative to know who reported the death.

Notes

Updated birth place from Ryde to Brading based on a re-examination of the 1851 census image.
