Frederick's mother Rosa Emily Leggatt died in July 1894 when he was only three years old.
Frederick always went by the name Fred to family and friends.

On the 1901 Census Fred was 10 years old and an inmate at the Percy House, Isleworth, Middlesex. With him were his brothers Walter (14) and George (12).
At the workhouse Fred acquired skills in woodwork and music. He was placed in employment as a Bandsman in the Northamptonshire Regiment some time prior to 1911.

In 1911 Fred was 20 years old and staying with his sister Ellen Mary Ann and her family at 39 Clifton Road, Southall, Southall Green, Middlesex. Occupation Musician 1st Northamptons

From 1914 to 1920 Fred was on active duty in World War One. He was taken prisoner in France early in the campaign.
As a prisoner of war he was put to work making uniforms for the German army and caring for the feet of fellow prisonners. He returned a skilled Taylor and chiropodist. He was awarded the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

After the war Fred found work as a stone mason at a local cemetary,but spent most of his career as a Male Nurse at the Hanwell Asylum in Southall, Middlesex. He continued to play the cornet and was a founder member of the Hanwell Brass Band.

From 1925 until 1958 he and his family resided at 28A Queens Avenue in Greenford, Middlesex. He moved with his son George to Hitchin, Hertfordshire and died there in 1964
