Narrative

Nothing is presently known about John's early life. In census returns, John is consistent that his place of birth was Gotherington, a hamlet in the north of the Parish of Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John appears alone as head of household in the hamlet of Gotherington, Gloucestershire. His age is given as 45, he works as an Agricultural Labourer and was born in county (Gloucestershire). He lives close to the household of John & Mary REEVE, their two children and Mary GUY, who are listed on the previous page but no family connection is presently known.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John is listed in the household of John FOWLER but no relationship is recorded. John claims he is 50 years old, that he is unmarried and that he was born in Gotherington, Gloucestershire. He works as an Agricultural Labourer and the census enumeration notes he is Deaf.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows John was living in a Stable in the hamlet of Gotherington. His age is given as 65 (sic 60 expected) and the other details remain consistent. Again he is noted as being deaf.

On the 1871 census, John was found living in a Barn in Gotherington. He is now 70 years old and remains unmarried. Other details consistent.

John has not been identified on the 1881 census. There are two death registrations which might match our subject. Based on age and consistent use of the surname variant REEVE, it is more probable this is the John REEVE whose death was recorded during the first quarter of 1874 at the age of 73 in the Winchcomb Registration District. See Research Note 2 below.

Research Notes

(1) Based on John's age from the 1851 and 1871 census returns, his place of birth of Gotherington on each of 1851, 1861 & 1871 census returns and his consistent use of the surname variant REEVE, this is most probably the John REEVE who was baptised at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishop's Cleeve in January 1800. The Bishops Transcript of the Parish Registers show this John to be the son of Richard and Mary REEVE of Gotherington.

(2) The second death registration which might match our subject (although fits less well) was for John REEVES during the first quarter of 1873 at the age of 74. This entry is felt to be a better match to John Reeves who lived in the nearby parish of Beckford which is also within the Winchcomb Registration District.
