In the person of Lazarus Reeve, of this city, Bureau county claims to have the earliest settler in Illinois, now living. Mr. Reeve settled in a portion of the Northwest territory, which subsequently became a part of Illinois in 1816, and came to this county in 1833. The United States has had twenty-three presidents and Mr. Reeve has lived under twenty-two of them, having been born in 1798.
The De Kalb Chronicle, 1 Oct 1892
It is claimed that the earliset settler in Illinois lives at Princeton. His name is Lazarus Reeve, and he settled in this State in 1816, it being then a part of the northwest territory. He is ninety-four years old.
In an article from 1 Sep 1893 commemorating Old Settlers Day, this entry was included among those who had passed away during the previous year:
Lazarus Reeve, June 15, '93, Princeton, 94, 1816.
Research Notes
It is odd that the census states he was born in Kentucky. The family would appear to have been in North Carolina at the time.Sources
