We are glad to learn that the report of the rejection of Captain Nathan Reeve by the Senate of the United States is not true. We are assured, upon the best authority, that he will be confirmed when his nomination is reached.
It seems however that some claiming to be acquaintances of his sent letters to those in authority stating that he was a southern sympathizer and this caused enough controversy that he had to submit a number of letters of recommendation and re-request his government position. A lengthy article written by him in Detroit Free Press, 25 Jun 1862 includes copies of letters and description of the situation.

He was a lawyer by occupation and widowed by the time he entered the veteran home in 1900. At that point, he was living with a nephew, Selah R. McLaren in Ohio.

Research Notes
Mary was probably a cousin on his of some sort as her father's name was Selah Reeve Hobbie. He was probably the son of Selah Reeve's sister Deborah who married Drake "Hobby."Sources
