Narrative

Robert is the fourth of five known children of James Reeve and his wife Elizabeth (formerly Shaw, nee PICKERING). Robert also had two older half brothers, from his mother's first marriage. His birth was registered during the second quarter of 1839 in the Basford Registration District, when his mother's maiden name was given as Pickering. See Research Note 1 below.

His birth was registered in the name Robert REEVE and during the early years of his life records showing his family using various spellings of their surname. In later life, he appears mostly as Robert REEVES.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Robert appears in his parent's home on South Street, Ilkeston. He was three years old and was born in county (that is to say in Derbyshire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Robert is still in his parent's home in the hamlet of Riddings in the civil parish of Alfreton, Derbyshire. He is 11 years old, was born at Ilkeston and his occupation is given as Coal Miner.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Robert is now aged 21 and still living with his parents. Other details remain consistent.

His father James dies in 1867 and on the 1871 census, Robert is living with his widowed mother Elizabeth Reeves. His widowed sister Maria and her three children complete the household on North and South Lane in Riddings.

Robert has yet to be identified on the 1881 census. See Research Note 2 below.

On the 1891 census, he appears as Robert REEVES, a boarder in the household of his widowed brother-in-law Robert BREWSTER at 119 Newlands Row, Golden Valley, Alfreton.

By the time of the 1901 census, Robert again appears in the household of his brother-in-law, now living on High Street, Riddings.

Robert has not been identified on the 1911 census and it is most likely his is the death noted by FreeBMD during the second quarter of 1908 in the Belper Registration District, aged 68. There is a corresponding burial at the Parish Church of Christ Church, Ironville, Derbyshire in June 1908, of a Robert Reeves, age 68 of High Street, Riddings.

Research Notes

(1)     Basford Registration District is in the Nottinghamshire Registration County, but it included several parishes in the adjacent county of Derbyshire, including Ilkeston. See UK BMD https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/basford.html. Robert always claimed Ilkeston as his place of birth.

(2)     Robert has yet to be identified on the 1881 census. He is NOT with
  • his sister Maria (who has remarried) and her husband Robert BREWSTER - RG11, Piece 3417, Folio 98 face, Page 5, Schedule 28
  • his younger brother Edward and wife Sarah - RG11, Piece 3417, Folio 88 face, Page 27, Schedule 148, continued on Folio 88 reverse, Page 28
(3)     On each census where Robert has been identified in adult life , he appears either as a single or unmarried man.
