In 1851, he was an ostler working at the Two Brewers Inn in Springfield, Essex under William Brooks. The census states he was born at Great Baddow.

In 1861, he was still an ostler at the Two Brewers Inn, although William had passed and Susannah Brooks was then head of household. It states he was born at Chelmsford.

In 1871, he was listed as an inmate at the Chelmsford Union Workhouse, born in Chelmsford, listed as a former ostler.
