Narrative
Members of the family of Isaac Reeve, Sr. began to migrate from North Carolina to Kentucky in the late 1790s when James Reeves, son of Isaac settled in Mason County, Kentucky around 1800 although he may have settled briefly in Madison County a short time previous to arriving in Mason County. In the "Kentucky County Marriages" collection at Family Search there is a marriage bond by James Reeves and William Holton for the marriage of William Holton to Sarah Reeves. See attached document.Mason County Will Book E p. 99
Inv. of Wm. A HOLTON, Feb. 17, 1820. (Had slave girl LUCRETIA.) App:
Jesse PEPPER, Alex NOWERS, Wm. HOLTON, Benj. REEVES.
Benjamin Reeves, one of the appraisers of William A. Holton's estate in 1820 was from a different Reeves' family and was the husband of James Reeves' daughter Nancy.
There are no clues to any children of Sarah Reeves and William Holton as the probate records are limited to the inventory of William Holton's estate only. The records do not even contain a listing of the associated Estate Sale.
Research Notes
In comparing the signatures of the James Reeves from this marriage bond to that of James of Wilkes County NC on the marriage bond of his sister, Bettie, to John Wilson in 1784 for which he was bondsman, the signatures are very similar. The signature from the Wilkes County document is not as clear as that of the Kentucky document because the pen or quill was making large ink smudges which makes a comparison of the name "Reeve" more difficult, but the given name "James" is very much like the Madison County signature. There were several unidentified daughters listed in Isaac Reeves, Sr.'s household in the 1790 census of Wilkes County. This Sarah Reeves who married William Holton appears to be James' sister, one of the previously unidentified daughters of Isaac Reeves, Sr. However, this William Holton is undoubtably not a son of Alexander Holton or brother of Sarah Holton Reeves, wife of James. Basic research of Holton families who settled in Mason County do not record this William who died in 1820 in the probate records of the families of Alexander or William Holton who died in 1810 and 1830, respectively.
