Mr. William L. Reeve, an old and honored resident of the town of Mount Hope, died at his home in New Vernon, Tuesday morning, at 5.30, in his 83rd year. He had enjoyed remarkably good health until last winter, when he began to fail. He rallied again with the coming of spring, however, and was feeling quite well until about a week ago. He was at Howells on Friday and was at the table with the family as late as Sunday night. He failed rapidly after Sunday and died as stated. "Heart failure" was pronounced the cause of death.
Mr. Reeve was born on the Reeve homestead near 8 1/2 station in the town of Wallkill now owned by Wickham Reeve, Nov. 15, 1810. Mrs. Jane Tryon of this city is a sister and Nelson Reeve of Port Jervis is a brother of the deceased. William, another brother, died many years ago.
When about 23 years of age Mr. Reeve was married to Eliza Hulse, who was a sister of the late Silas Hulse, near Ridgebury, in the town of Wawayanda. Soon after his marriage he bought and moved on the farm in New Vernon, which has since been his home for a period of seventy years. His wife lived but a few years, and died leaving no children. His second wife was Betsy M. Wilkin, to whom he was married about 1850. She died in the fall of 1891. They had two children, Oliver, who died at the age of three years, and Henry S. Reeve, of New Vernon.
Mr. Reeve was an unusually intelligent man and had good business qualifications. He was a great reader and took a deep interest in politics. Though averse to holding office he was twice elected Supervisor and represented his town in the Board in 1851 and '52. Ho was a Whig previous to the formation of the Republican party and since that time an ardent Republican. He was a friend of good schools and took a great interest in the education of his three grandchildren, the children of his son, Henry, who were members of his family.
Mr. Reeve was a man of strong friendships, and devotion to his friends was one of his characteristics. He had no church connection, but was a man who always tried to observe the Golden Rule in his dealings with his fellow men, and to lead a pure and upright life. Though he lived to a ripe old age and had long since passed the limit of three score and ten, his death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him.
The funeral will be held at the house at New Vernon Thursday, at 2 p. m.
