In 1871, William is found as a lodger, age 52, in the household of John Hatley. It states he was a tailor, born in Maldon, Essex.

In 1891, he is in the household of Elizabeth Skipper, widow, age 62. He himself was 72, again listed as a tailor born in Maldon, Essex.

In 1901, he was a boarder in the house of Mary A. W. Clarke, a widow. He was age 82, a retired tailor born in Maldon, Essex.
