Marriage from First Church, Huntington, Long Island Records:
  • Huntington | 1761 Jany. 11 | Abner Reeve and Hannah Barnes | (groom of) R. in M. C. E. J. (bride of) Huntington

Note that "M. C. E. J." probably refers to "Morris County, East Jersey."

A biographical entry on his grandson John Reeves states that "The senior Mr. Reeves was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1781, son of Abner Reeves, a native of New Jersey and a soldier in the Revolutionary war."

Abner Reeves of Rostraver, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania wrote his will on 5 Mar 1825 and it was proved 25 Aug 1828. He mentioned his children Jesse, Abner, Samuel, Manasseh, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Hannah, Susannah, and grandson Barnes C. "Reves."

His wife was apparently Hannah, who died in 1820 age 79 and is buried next to him in the Rehoboth Cemetery in Rostraver.

Research Notes

This is almost certainly the son of Manassah Reeve of Morris County, New Jersey. This fits well with the biographical entry for his grandson which places Abner's origins in New Jersey. In addition, the marriage record seems to indicate he was residing in Morris County in 1761.

Wesley Baker's Study of the Reeve Family suggests that this Abner may have been a son of Rev. Abner Reeve. This seems unlikely. Multiple biographies of Rev. Abner Reeve state that he had three sons and one daughter by his first wife. Two of those sons have been identified as Paul Reeve and Benjamin Reeve while a number of other sources indicate Ezra Reeve was the other one.
