Narrative

From the HISTORY OF ECHOLS FAMILY by Milner Echols in 1850:
"James Echols second daughter named Mary Echols, married Jeremiah Reeves. They had five sons and four daughters...Their first son Absolom Echols Reeves, who lives at Rome married Elisa Tyas, by her had one daughter who died at about the time she was twenty years old while she was attending Association in Chattanooga County."

The Minutes of the Hancock County Court of 13 March 1826 record Absolom E. Reeves as being appointed the guardian for the orphans of a John C. Peek. He continued to serve in that capacity until a statement of accounts filed on 15 January 1833 which appears to be the final record. In December of 1828, a poor orphan girl, Amanda Champion, was bound out to Absolom E. Reeves to learn domestic housewifery as well as to read and write. This may be the female child age 10-15 listed in Absolom E. Reeves household in the 1830 census.

The household of Absolom E. Reeves in the 1830 census consisted of 1 Male 5-10, 1 Male 30-40, 1 Female under 5 years old, 1 Female 10-15 and 1 Female 20-30. The male child 5-10 years old in this census may have been Absolom's younger brother James M. Reeves. A James M. Reeves, age about 31, was living in the hotel where Absolom was the hotel keeper in the 1850 census but there was no relationship stated.

Absolom E. Reeves is recorded as a trustee of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Hancock County, organized in 1831, and as a trustee of the Powelton Academy in a Hancock County indenture of 1 January 1835. (DB O: p334-335)

On 2 May 1836, A. E. Reeves of Hancock County was a delegate to the Anti Van Buren Convention held in Milledgeville, Georgia.
