Narrative

Albert James Reeves is the third known child of Charles REEVES and his wife Elizabeth Ann (nee COTTON) and the only one of their children to survive to adulthood. The IoW FHS notes his birth was in 1861 and was recorded in the Ryde Registration sub District. The GRO Index to the Registration of Births has an entry for Albert James REEVES during the 3q1861 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. Both entries record his mother's maiden name as COTTON.

On the 1871 census, Albert Reeves appears in his parent's household at Cottage Number 3 on Dover Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. He is 9 years old and his place of birth is given as Ryde.

At the time of the 1881 census, Albert again appears with his parent who are now living at the Back of Sea View, Dover Street, Ryde. His age is now recorded as 20 and he was born in Ryde. He is now working as a Waterman, the same occupation as his father.

Albert James REEVES married Sarah Ann MYALL in January 1886 at the Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, Smith Square in the City of Westminster, Middlesex. The marriage register notes his father is Charles Reeves, a Waterman and that he is working as a Police Constable. There are two witnesses, John Myall and Emma Jane COTTON, perhaps a relative of Albert's mother and all parties signed the register.
The known children of Albert J Reeves and his wife Sarah Ann (nee MYALL) are
  1. Elizabeth Annie Reeves, b.reg. 1890 Kensington Reg.Dist.
  2. Florence Mabel Reeves, b.reg. 1891 Brentford
  3. William Thomas Reeves, b.reg. 1893 Hendon
  4. Frederick Charles Reeves, b.reg. 1894 & d.reg. 1894 Hendon
  5. George Albert Reeves, b.reg. 1895 & d.reg. 1895 Hendon
  6. George Victor Reeves, b.reg. 1897 & d.reg. 1898 Hendon
  7. Ernest Andrew Reeves, b.reg. 1893 Hendon & d.reg. 1900 Kensington
  8. Percy Ronald Reeves, b.reg. 1903 Kensington
The above birth registrations are all recorded with mother's maiden name of MYALL with the exception of that for Ernest which shows MYAL (sic).

On the 1891 census, Albert and his wife Sarah, who appears as Annie on this and many subsequent records, are living on Long Acre, in the parish of St Martin in the Fields, London. He is 29 years old and again claims Ryde, Isle of Wight as his place of birth. He is working as Police Constable. Annie is 25 years old and was born in Chichester, Sussex. In addition to their daughter Elizabeth (age 1, born Kensington) there is a visitor, Louise J LUTIGOW (22, born Newcastle on Type, who is employed as a Tailoress).

By the time of the 1901 census, Albert and Annie have moved to 1 Silchester Street in Kensington, London. His age, place of birth and occupation remain consistent. In addition to his wife Annie, their household now includes their daughters Elizabeth (age 11, born Kensington, London) and Florence (9, born Greenford, Middlesex) along with their son William (8, Willesden, Middlesex).

Albert retired from the Metropolitan Police in April 1910, having served for 25 years and 5 days and started to draw his police pension. At that time he was living at 41 Methley Street, Kennington, London and he named his wife as Annie.

On the 1911 census Albert is to be found with his widowed mother Elizabeth at her home on Warwick Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He is 49 years old, married and was born at Ryde. His occupation is given as Labourer. It is likely that Albert completed the return on his mother's behalf as her signature is in a different style of handwriting to the body of the return. Albert notes he has been married 25 years, that eight children were born alive, that four are then surviving and that four had died. This was then struck through but remains legible. See Research Note 1 below.

Albert's wife Sarah Ann Reeves is enumerated on the 1911 census at 23 Camberwell New Road, Brixton, London, although the first person listed, she describes herself as Wife rather than Head of Household and she has also been married 25 years with 8 children born, 4 living and 4 died. Their son Percy Ronald Reeves (8, born Notting Hill) and married daughter Florence Mabel TROTT (age 20, born Greenford, Middlesex and married for one year, with no children) complete the household. See Research Note 2 below.

Albert has not been identified on the 1939 Register. When Albert's son Percy married in August 1924, he noted that his father was deceased. However, no likely death registration has been found in the FreeBMD or GRO Index.

Research Notes

(1) The death registration of his mother was recorded during 1q1912 in the Isle of Wight Registration District and the IoW FHS index notes the event was registered in the Ryde Registration sub District.

(2) A probable marriage registration entry for daughter Florence has yet to be identified.

(3) The death of Albert's wife Sarah Anne REEVES is probably that recorded during the second quarter of 1927 in the Lambeth Registration District, age 64.
