Narrative

Alfred William REEVES is the sixth of seven known children of William Adey REEVES and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee ADEY). His birth was recorded during the second quarter of 1868 in the Birkenhead Registration District when his mother's maiden name was recorded as ADEY. He was baptised in September 1870 at the Parish Church of St Oswald, at Bidston(e), Cheshire.

On the 1871 census, Alfred appears in the household of his parents William and Mary at Greenway Road, Tranmere in Cheshire. He was 3 years old, a Scholar and was born at Tranmere, Cheshire.

At the time of the 1881 census, Alfred again appears in his parent's household a the same address. His age and place of birth are consistent with the previous census and he is still a Scholar.

On the 1891 census, Alfred remains with his parents and the family are now living on Rose Mount, Birkenhead, Cheshire. He is now 23 years of age, again claims birth at Tranmere, Cheshire and is now working as a Banker's Clerk.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Alfred William REEVES and Edith Mary JONES during the third quarter of 1896 in the Birkenhead Registration District.
The known children of Alfred William REEVES and his wife Edith Mary (nee JONES) are

2. Edward Dudley REEVES, b.reg. 4q1905

Both births were registered in the Birkenhead Registration District and on both occasions their mother's maiden name was recorded as JONES.

By the time of the 1901 census Alfred and his wife Edith are living on Balford Road in Birkenhead, Cheshire. His age remains consistent with prior census returns., but his place of birth is now recorded as Birkenhead, Cheshire. He is working as a Bank Clerk. His wife Edith, who is listed as Edith E (sic) Reeves, is 29 years of age and was born at Birkenhead, Cheshire, as was their son Alfred L Reeves who is just 11 months old.

On the 1911 census Alfred William REEVES and his wife Edith Mary REEVES are living on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead in Cheshire. Alfred notes he is 43 years old, was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire and that he is employed as a Bank Clerk. Edith is now 39 years old and they have been married for 14 years and have had two children, both of who are then alive. She also was born at Birkenhead, as were their two sons. Alfred Leslie REEVES is 10 years old and Edward Dudley REEVES is 5 years old. See Research Note 1 below.

The GRO Index notes the death of Alfred William REEVES during the second quarter of 1927 in the Wirral Registration District. He was 59 years old at the time of his death.

The index to the Probate Registry notes that in August 1927, Edith Mary REEVES, widow, was granted probate in Liverpool over the estate of Alfred William REEVES of West View, Thingwall, Cheshire.

Research Notes

(1) From the 1911 census it is highly probable Alfred's younger son was actually known by his second given name Dudley. "Dudley Reeves" has been neatly written in the second column of the census schedule by his father, and the word "Edward" was then added in the left margin.
