Western Reserve Chronicle, 21 May 1856
DIED--In Warren, on the 14 inst., Mrs. ANNA REEVES ELWELL, wife of Samuel Elwell, aged 57 years.
Mrs. Elwell emigrated to this town in company with her husband, 40 years ago, from Bridgeton, Cumberland county, New Jersey. She was then 17 years of age. For 36 years a member of the Congregational Church of this place, retired in her disposition; and without ostentation, she lived an unusually active, earnest and religious life.
To her this life was a momentous and vital reality, as the preparatory state for that other great life. To fit herself and family for usefulness here, and immortality hereafter, has been the one great absorbing object of her life, and this purpose has ever been pursued with firmness and constancy. After a long and wearisome illness, which completely exhausted the body, she departed full of hope, her mind remaining clear and strong to the last.
Warren Reserve Chronicle, 1 Nov 1882
Last Thursday evening the venerable Sam'l Elwell was seized with a fit, while walking along Main street, which the physician says closely resembles apoplexy. He was taken to his home and shortly after expired. Deceased was one of the few remaining pioneers of this region. He was born in Salem county, N. J., April 18, 1795. He married February 29, 1816, Anna Reeves, and the same spring removed from Bridgeton, N. J., to this town, where he was employed for several years in the woolen factory of Benjamin Stevens. His wife Anna died in 1856, and in 1860 Mr. Elwell was remarried to Mrs. Clarissa Hall, who died in 1871. Mr. Elwell leaves six sons, who are among the useful men of the day. They are Stephen, now living in Kansas; Gen. John J., of Cleveland; Augustus, of Braceville; Alfred, of Willoughby; Joseph S. and Wm. H., of Chicago. The funeral services were held yesterday, at 2 o'clock p. m.
The headstone inscription reads: "Our Mother/ANNA REEVES/Wife of/SAMUEL ELWELL/DIED/May 14, 1856/Aged 57 Years/SAMUEL ELWELL/DIED NOV. 24, 1882/Age 88 YRS."
