Narrative

Annie Reeves was born in April 1881 in Southampton, Hampshire. She was the fourth of twelve surviving fifth of thirteen children born to Samuel REEVES and his wife Matilda (nee Reed/REEVES). She was baptised in December 1881 at the neighbouring Parish Church of Christ Church, Northam, Southampton.

On the 1891 census, Annie is not found with her parents the family home at 21 Longcroft Street, Southampton. Rather she is at her maternal grandfather Edward REEVES's home at 23 Longcroft Street, where she is noted as being 9 years old, born in Southampton and her occupation is "Scholar".

Annie has not been uniquely identified on the 1901 census, although it is known she spent some time working in domestic service prior to her marriage. It is therefore possible she is the individual working for Christine Englebach at Dudley House, Tywenham Road, Southbourne, Hampshire as a domestic housemaid.

In April 1906 Annie married her first cousin George Henry REEVES at the Parish Church of St Mary in Southampton. Annie and George had three children.

By the time of the 1911 census, Annie was living with her husband George at 107 Stewarts Road in Battersea, London. She was 29 years old and claimed birth in Southampton, Hampshire. In addition to their first born child (aged 4 years), the household also included her father-in-law Edward REEVES and two of her brothers-in-law.

Research Notes

(1) Oral family tradition, confirmed by the release of the 1911 census in 2012, indicated that Samuel and Matilda had thirteen children. However, prior to November 2016 the identities of only twelve children were known to family researchers. It transpires the missing child, now known to be Ellen Matilda Reeves, was their eldest. This has necessitated the renumbering the remaining 12 children.
