Archibald, Mary, and family were enumerated in Rockdale, Randolph Co., AL, HH 406, in 1860.

Archibald Reeves enlisted on 25 Jul 1861 in Randolph County, Alabama and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, Company K, 13th Alabama Infantry CSA. He was listed on roster as absent without leave May 3, 1863-Jul 14, 1863 and dropped from the roll for continued absence. It is currently unknown whether he was a prisoner of war or wounded during this period. Subsequently on 1 Sep 1864 at Rome, Georgia he enlisted as a private in Co. E of the 1st Regiment of Alabama Cavalry of the union army. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 Jan 1865. His military records describe him as 5 ft. 11 inches tall, with blue eyes, dark hair and a light complexion.

Land records indicate that Archibald T. Reeves purchased 40 acres of land in Alabama on January 1, 1859. Then on May 5, 1861 he purchased two parcels of land; one 40 acres and the second one of 80 acres. The 80 acres were adjacent to the first 40 acres purchased in 1859, but the second 40 acres are listed in another township.

Archibald serves on BOTH sides during the Civil War. He enlisted on July 26, 1861 with Capt. E. B. Smith’s company of the 13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. This unit later becomes Company K, 13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He is elected a Second Lieutenant. The 13th Regiment is part of Archer’s Brigade, Heth’s Division, A.P. Hill’s (3rd) Corp, of the Northern Virginia Army (Commanded by Robert E. Lee). The company is organized on 19th July, 1861 and mustered into Confederate service between the 19th and 26th July, 1861 for the duration of the war. In the early part of 1862, he is located in camp at Yorktown, Va. In April of 1862 he is paid a $450 bounty for his recruiting efforts. On June 27th, 1862, the second day of the Seven Day Battle Battle of Seven Pines in Virginia he is suffers a gunshot wound in the foot. On June 29, 1862 he is admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Virginia. He is transferred to Atlanta, Georgia for 40 days. On Nov. 4, 1862 he is admitted to the Receiving and Wayside Hospital or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Virginia (private quarters) and then is furloughed for 50 days. But, basically by July, 1863 he is dropped from the rolls of the 13th Alabama Infantry. Though I only currently have an abstract, there is a record of Archibald Reeves mustering into the Union Army on Sept. 1, 1864, in Rome, Ga.. He joined Company E of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USA as a private, and was promoted to Sgt. on January 1, 1865. He mustered out 10-20-1865 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Research Notes

This individual's name is spelled alternately Reeves and Reaves. Throughout the records except for the 1850 census Archibald T Reeves is listed as being engaged in agriculture/farmer. In the 1850 Georgia Census he is listed as “track raiser”. I’m not sure but that may mean he worked laying track for a railroad at that time.
