Narrative

Arthur Harry REEVES, the son of Frederick Reeves and his wife Emily, was the third born of their five known children. His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1897 in the South Stoneham Registration District.

By the time of the 1901 census, Arthur H. Reeves appears as the four year old son in his parents household at 20 Shirley Park Road, Shirley, Southampton, Hampshire. He was born in Southampton, Hampshire and appears along with three siblings, two elder and one younger.

Arthur's father Frederick had died prior to the 1911 census; his mother Emily Reeves is shown as head of household at 85 Stratton Road, Shirley, Southampton and she is a widow. Arthur is 14 years old, was born in Shirley, Hampshire and he is at school. His elder sister Alice, younger sister Hilda and younger brother William complete the household.

At an unknown date Arthur enlisted in the British Army at Southampton.1   He was serving with 2nd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment in Gallipoli2   and died on 13 August 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial in Turkey.3   The publication "Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919" indicates he died at sea1 , perhaps on a hospital ship.

Arthur's sacrifice is recorded on the Southampton Cenotaph and the modern Memorial Wall in Watts Park, Southampton along with four other individuals who share the surname Reeves; Edward Alec REEVES, Ernest Henry REEVES, Ernest James Benjamin REEVES and Frank H REEVES. 7 8
