Narrative

Based on consistent information from the census returns of 1881 and thereafter, Charles was born about 1864 at Idmiston in Wiltshire. However a matching entry has yet to be identified on FreeBMD in this location/period.

On the 1871 census, it is highly probable Charles is the individual who appears the son of Henry Reeves and Eliza (nee mnu) in the parish of Idmiston. He is 8 years old and his place of birth is shown as Boscombe, Wiltshire. The parish of Boscombe adjoins the parish of Idmiston with Porton.

At the time of the 1881 census, it is highly probable Charles is the individual who appears as a Lodger in the household of Albert and Sarah VAUKINS at 2 Finkley Cottages in the hamlet of Smannell, near Andover, Hampshire. His age is shown as 19 years old and he is employed as a Farm Servant. His birth place is recorded as Eldimston (sic), Wiltshire. Albert Vaukins is himself employed as an Agricultural Labourer (Carter) and in addition to his wife Sarah and 4 month old son there are four further Lodgers in addition to Charles Reeves, all of whom are employed as Farm Servants.

Charles married Rose SPENCER in the latter part of 1889. The marraige is noted by FreeBMD in the fourth quarter of the year in the Basingstoke Registration District.
The known children of Charles Reeves and his wife Rose (nee Spencer) are
  1. Henry Thomas S. Reeves, born 1890 at Upton Grey, Hampshire
  2. James Albert S Reeves, born 1892, Herriard, Hampshire
  3. Charles Spencer Reeves, born 1894, Upton Grey, Hampshire
  4. John Spencer Reeves, born c1897, Upton Grey, Hampshire
  5. Frank Sidney Reeves, born c1900, Herriard, Hampshire
  6. Walter William Reeves, born 1905, Froxfield, Hampshire

On the 1891 census, Charles along with his wife Rose and their son Henry were living in one of the cottages at Lower Farm in Preston Candover, Hampshire. Charles is head of household, is 28 years old and claims birth in Idmiston, Wiltshire. He is working as a Cowman.

By the time of the 1901 census, Charles and his wife Rose are living in the Parish of Herriard. The place name is indistinctly written, perhaps Narker Green. (See Research Note 1.) He is now 38 years old and his place of birth is recorded as Idminstone (sic, Idmiston), Wiltshire. He is working as a Waggoner on (a) Farm. Also living in the family home are their five eldest sons.

A decade later and the 1911 census shows that Charles has moved his family south to Froxfield, Hampshire. The family are now living at Bydean Cottage, Froxfield. Charles and Rose have been married for 21 years and all six of their children are, at that date, still alive. Indeed they are all still living in the family home. Charles is now 47 years old and again working as a Cowman on Farm.

Charles and Rose lost two of their sons, Henry and Charles during the Great War.

It is probable Charles' death is that noted by FreeBMD in 1938, aged 75.

Research Notes

(1) Although the place name on the 1901 census is not easily discernible, the next but one schedule is for Lea Farm. A "Lee Farm" (sic) can be seen on a contemporary map from the National Library of Scotland's collection http://maps.nls.uk/view/101168795
