Narrative

It is likely that Charles was the son of John Reeves and Betty (maiden name unknown) who was baptised at the Parish Church of The Holy Cross, Chiseldon, Wiltshire in November 1817. He was the eldest of nine known children of John & Elizabeth/Betty.

Charles was probably married to Mary (maiden name unknown) some time around 1839/40. On the 1841 census their household included Elizabeth who was 1 year old and her baptism at Mapledurham Oxfordshire is recorded in July 1840. See Research Note 1.

Known children of Charles Reeves and his wife Mary (mnu) are
  1. Elizabeth Reeves, bapt July 1840 in Mapledurham, Oxfordshire
  2. George Reeves, bapt February 1842 in Mapledurham    > See Research Note 2.
  3. John Reeves, b.reg 1q 1842 Bradfield Reg.Dist.               > See Research Note 2.
  4. Fanny Reeves, born c1845
  5. Lucy Reeves, bapt March 1846 in Mapledurham
  6. George Reeves, bapt October 1848 in Chiseldon, Wiltshire
  7. Joseph Reeves, bapt November 1850 in Chiseldon
  8. Robert Henry Reeves, b.reg. 2q 1853 in Highworth Reg.Dist.
  9. Charles Reeves, bapt March 1858 in Chiseldon
  10. Ellen Reeves, bapt September 1858 in Chisledon
  11. Mary Ann Reeves, born c 1862

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Charles and Mary are living a Blagroves Farm in the parish of Mapledurham, Oxfordshire, where they are enumerated under the surname REVES. Charles is shown as being aged 20 and working as a labourer. Neither he nor Mary were born in county (that is to say Oxfordshire) but their daughter Elizabeth (age 1) was.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charles and Mary had moved to Badbury, a hamlet within Chiseldon, Wiltshire. Charles is 33 years old and claims birth in Badbury. He is working as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife Mary, their children John (8), Fanny (6), Lucy (4), George (3) and Joseph (9 months) complete the household. Charles's mother Betty is also living in the village of Badbury at the time of the 1851 census.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Charles and Mary again living in the village of Badbury. Charles is now 44 years old and claims birth in Chiseldon, Wiltshire. He is employed as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife Mary, their children Lucy (15), George (12), Joseph (10), Robert(8), Charles (5) and Ellen (3) complete the household. His mother is again living nearby in Badbury, in the household of Charles' brother (Young) Robert Reeves.

On the 1871 census, Charles and Mary are again to be found in Badbury. He is 53 years old and again claiming birth in Badbury and working as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife Mary, their six youngest children complete the household.

At the time of the 1881 census, Charles and Mary are still living in Badbury. He is now 64 years old, claiming birth in Chiseldon and employed as a General Labourer. Their sons Joseph (30, unmarried) and Robert Hy (27, unm) complete the household.

On the 1891 census, Charles & Mary remain in Badbury. Now 74 yeras old and born in Badbury, he is working as a General Labourer. Their son Joseph (40, single) completes the household.

Neither Charles nor Mary have been identified on the 1901 census and their son Joseph is now married. It is highly probable that the death of Charles is that noted by FreeBMD in the fourth quarter of 1897 in Highworth Registration District, age 78.

Research Notes

Some older records refer to Chiseldon, Wiltshire as Chisledon (sic). The modern spelling of Chiseldon is used on this page.

(1) It is probable that Charles was married in the fourth quarter of 1839 in the Bradfield Registration District (Berkshire) to either Mary LAMBOURN or Mary WEBB. Bradfield Reg.Dist includes the parish of Mapledurham in Oxfordshire where he was living at the time of the 1841 census and where at least three of their elder children were baptised in the early & mid 1840's.

(2) It is highly probable that son George baptised in February 1842 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3XR-78Q is the same individual as John whose birth was registered in 1q 1842 and he was subsequently known as John. If the opportunity presents, the original parish register for St Margaret's Church, Mapledurham, Oxfordshire should be consulted.

(3) There is no obvious birth registration for Fanny. There is a Caroline Reeves registered in 4q 1844, but by 1q1846 (and perhaps earlier) there were two Reeves couples registering births in the Bradfield Registration District.
