Narrative

Nothing is currently know of Charles's early life. Based purely on age and geography it is possible this is the son of Charles and Mary REEVES who was baptised in July 1801 at Tangley, Hampshire but further work would be necessary to prove any possible connection. The parishes of Tangley, Hampshire and Chute, Wiltshire are adjacent.

Charles REEVES and Charlotte MUNDAY were married in May 1831 at the Parish Church of St Peters in the Wood, Appleshaw, Hampshire. Appleshaw is separated from both Chute, Wiltshire and Tangley, Hampshire by Chute Forest, Wiltshire, an extra-parochial place.
The known children of Charles Reeves and Charlotte (nee MUNDAY) are
  1. Jane Reeves, bapt. 1831, Appleshaw, Hants
  2. Charles Reeves, bapt 1834
  3. Francis Reeves, bapt. 1837
  4. Mary Reeves, bapt. 1839
  5. Ann Reeves, bapt 1841
  6. Rhoda Reeves, bapt. 1844
  7. Sarah Reeves, bapt. 1846
  8. Lucy Reeves, bapt. 1850
Aside from their eldest known child Jane, all the above baptisms were at the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Chute, Wiltshire

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Charles and Charlotte were living at Hophouse Cottage at Chute in Wiltshire. Neither of them claimed birth in county (that is to say they were not born in Wiltshire). From subsequent census returns, we know Charlotte and eldest daughter Jane both claimed birth in Appleshaw, Hampshire. Charles's age is shown as 40, placing his birth around 1801 (with all the usual caveats about ages from the 1841 census).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charlotte is shown as a Widow and as Head of Household. Since Charles is named as Lucy's father at the time of her baptism in April 1850, this would suggest his death occurred between mid 1849 and early 1851. It is possible Charles's death is that noted by FreeBMD occurring during the third quarter of 1850 in the Andover Registration District, which includes the parish of Chute.

Research Notes

(1) Charles's widow Charlotte remarried in 1857 and remained in Chute for the rest of her life, living in close proximity to their son Francis Reeves.
