Narrative
Charles is the elder of two known children of Charles Frederick Reeves and his wife May (nee HIGGINS). His birth was registered in the third quarter of 1894 in the Portsea Registration District. The GRO index lists him as Charles Newbery (sic) REEVES, elsewhere he is recorded as Charles Newbury REEVES.At the time of the 1901 census, Charles is living with his parents at 47 Riga Terrace, Portsmouth. He is 6 years old and his place of birth is given as Landport, Hampshire.
Charles enlisted in the British Army sometime prior to the 1911 census. He is not listed with his parents who were still living at 47 Riga Terrace. Rather he is in Barracks at Aldershot with the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. His age is shown as 18, so it is probable he inflated his age when joining-up and his place of birth is recorded as Portsmouth, Hampshire.
The CWGC notes he died in December 1914 and that he is buried in the Maple Leaf Cemetery in the Hainaut Province of Belgium (BE-WHT). It additionally notes "Son of Charles and May Reeves, of 47 Riga Terrace, Landport, Portsmouth".
Charles's sacrifice is recorded on the Portsmouth Cenotaph as "Reeves C.N.", along with four other individuals who share the surname Reeves; "Reeves F." (navy), "Reeves H." (navy), "Reeves H.R." (army) who is believed to be Henry Reuben REEVES and "Reeves R." (navy). 7, 8, 9
