Narrative

Charles William REEVES is the second known child of James REEVES and his second wife Hannah Elizabeth (nee FURZE). His birth was registered during the first quarter of 1858 in the New Forest Registration District, when is mother's maiden name was given as FURZE. He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Mary, Copythorne in March 1858.

At the time of the 1861 census, Charles appears with his parents at Bartley, Hampshire along with an older and younger brother. He is 3 years of age and was born at Eling, Hampshire.

On the 1871 census, Charles again appears with his parents, now at Cadnam, Hampshire. He is now 13 years old and working as an Agricultural Labourer. His place of birth is again given as Eling.

Charles' father died in 1874 and Charles does not appear in his widowed mother Hannah Reeves' household at the time of the 1881 census. It is possible he is the Charles Reeves who appears in the household of Edward and Sarah Carter at 5 College Street on the Parish of St Marys, Southampton. He claims to be 20 years old (rather than 23 which would be consistent with prior decades) and that he was born at Bartley, Hampshire, He is working as a Baker and he is a boarder in the the Edward's household. See Research Note 1 below.

Charles has not been identified on the 1891 or subsequent census returns for England and Wales.

It is highly probable that the death of Charles William Reeves registered during the fouth quarter of 1886 in the New Forest Registration District, age 28 (so born c1858) is that for this individual. See Research Note 2 below.

Research Notes

(1) Initial (and not very comprehensive) research has so far not established a family connection between Charles Reeves and the Carter family he was boarding with at the time of the 1881 census.

(2) In the five year period 1858 +/-2 there are just three births registered using the names Charles William REEVES. The other births were registered during 4q1856 in East London Reg. Dist. and during 2q1857 in Shoreditch Reg. Dist. This makes the death registered in the New Forest Registration District highly likely to be this individual, but the possibility of an incomer should not be ignored.
