Narrative

Edmund is the fifth of 13 known children of William REEVES and his wife Harriet (nee HOLKHAM). He was baptised in March 1830 at the Parish Church of St Andrew at Tangmere in Sussex.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Edmund appears a family context as one of ten children in his parent's household at Tangmere in Sussex. He is 11 years old and was born within county (that is, in Sussex).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Edmund is 21 years old, unmarried and claims birth in Tangmere, Sussex. He is shown as a lodger in the household of James REEVES and his wife Phoebe at Boxgrove, but it is suspect he is actually James's nephew.

In June 1856 Edmund married Ann BROCKHURST at the Parish Church of St Andrew at Tangmere in Sussex. The marriage is recorded in the Westhampnett Registration District during the second quarter of 1856.

The known children of Edmund REEVES and Ann (nee Brockhurst) are
  1. William Reeves, born 1856
  2. Charles Reeves, born 1859
  3. George Reeves, born 1861
  4. Thomas Reeves, born 1863-4
  5. Mary Ann Reeves, born 1866
  6. Harriett Reeves, Born 1871
  7. Emily Reeves, born 1875
  8. James Reeves, born 1876
  9. Alfred Edmund Reeves, born 1880.
All of the above births were registered in the Westhampnett Registration District. William was baptised at Tangmere and Charles, George, Thomas and Mary are known to have been baptised at East Dean. Although a widow at the time of the 1911 census, Ann indicates there were 9 children born to the present marriage, all of whom were then living. This information has been struck through, but remains legible.

The 1861 census shows Edmund and his wife Ann living in East Dean, Sussex, He is shown as 30 years old and born in Tangmere, Sussex. He is working as a Groom and Gardener. Sons William and Charles complete the household.

A decade later and on the 1871 census, Edmund and his wife Ann are still living in East Dean. He is now 40 years old, a Labourer, who is claiming birth in Boxgrove Sussex. Their five children William (aged 14 years), Charles (11), George (9), Thomas (7) and Mary Ann(5) complete the household.

At the time of the 1881 census, Edmund and his wife Ann are again to be found in East Dean. He is now 51 years old, a Farm Labourer, again claiming birth in Boxgrove, Sussex. There are seven children in the household, with William, the eldest, 24 years old and Alfred, the youngest just 18 months old. Only their sons Charles and George are absent.

On the 1891 census, Edmund and his wife Ann are living on Butchers Lane, East Dean in Sussex. He is now 62 years old, an Agricultural Labourer, born in Tangmere, Sussex. Sons William (34, single), James (14) and Alfred E (10) are living with their parents. Also recorded as present is Archibald G Reeves (aged 3), described as Edmund's Grandson. This is presumed to be Archibald George HANSELL, see the page for George Reeves, son of Edmund for additional information.

By the time of the 1901 census, Edmund and Ann are still living on Butchers Lane in East Dean, Sussex. Edmund is now 71 years old and claims birth at Boxgrove, Sussex. He is working as a Cattleman on Farm. Their son James (24, single) completes the household, and their son William (now married) is living a few doors away.

Edmund has not been identified on the 1911 census and his wife Ann appears as a widow. It is highly probable his is the death registered in the fourth quarter of 1909 in the Westhampnett Registration District as Edmund REEVES, age 80.
