Narrative

Edward is the fourth know child and first son of Edward Reeves and his wife Fanny (nee CROOK). His birth was registered during the second quarter of 1861 in the Southampton Registration District.

The death of his mother was recorded during the first quarter of 1870 and on the 1871 census Edward, along with his three younger brothers, appears in the St Mary's Union Poor House. He was 11 years old, born in Southampton and a Scholar. His widowed father and sister Ann were living on Longcroft Street.

It is likely young Edward had a scrape with the law. In February 1876 The Hampshire Observer reported a story "The Nuisance in Canal-Walk"

Thomas B. Coles, Frederick Whitehead, George Read, William Reeves and Edward Reeves, youths, four of whom lived in Longcroft-street, and one in Bevois-street, were placed in the dock, the former was charged with wilfully damaging a door in Canal-walk by placing nut shells in the keyhole, on Sunday afternoon. — Mr A. Candy, pork butcher, Canal-walk, proved seeing Coles go to Mr Haysom's shop door and place something in the keyhole. He called him out, and Police-constable William Smith took Coles into custody, the other youths were in his company at the time. Great complaints have been made of persons not being able to get into their houses through the keyholes being stopped up. — Superintendant Breary said all the defendants lived about a mile from Canal-walk, and they and others came there on Sundays to sommit (sic - commit) nuisances. Great complaints had been made, and a memorial on the subject had been presented to the Watch Committee signed by the whole of the inhabitants. — Coles was ordered to come up again in a month, the others being discharged.

On Boxing Day 1880, Edward married Elizabeth Ann ELLERY, the daughter of George Ellery, at the Parish Church of Christ Church, Northam, Southampton. FreeBMD notes their marriage in the 4q1880 in Southampton Registration District.

The GRO Index of Births shows mother's maiden name of ELLERY for Edward and Elizabeth and ELVEY for Ernest.

At the time of the 1881 census, Edward and his wife Elizabeth are living at 23 Longcroft Street where his father Edward is HoH. Our subject Edward is 19 years old and working as a General Labourer. Their son Edward H is recorded as being (Reeves_Edward_332|Edward))'s grandson and under 5 months old. Elizabeth's parents George and Sarah Ellery with their family are living next door at 22 Longcroft Street.

On the 1891 census, Edward and Elizabeth plus their three children are living at 12 Godfrey's Cut in the St Mary district of Southampton. His age and place of birth remain consistent and he is now described as a General Labourer working for the Gas Company.

By the time of the 1901 census Edward and Elizabeth have moved to 33 Melbourne Street and he is now Assistant Yard Foreman at the Gas Works. Their two younger children remain in the family home.

On the 1911 census Edward and Elizabeth are living at 32 Melbourne Street. He is now 49 years old, still claiming birth in Southampton and is now the Yard Foreman for the Gas Company. Their younger son (Ernest) Frank remains in the family home and Edward's youngest brother William is also living with them. The census return confirms Edward and Elizabeth have been married 30 years and have had three children, all of whom were then surviving.

Edward has not been identified on the 1939 Register and it is probable his is the death noted by FreeBMD during 2q1936 in the Southampton Registration District, age 74.
