Narrative

Elizabeth Ann Reeves is the second of three children and only daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (nee ELLERY). Her birth was registered during the fourth quarter of 1883 in the Southampton Registration District. The GRO Index notes her mother's maiden name as Ellery. She was baptised on 31 December 1883 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton.

On the 1891 census, Elizabeth appears with her parents Edward and Elizabeth and two siblings at 12 Godfrey's Cut, St Mary's district in Southampton. She is 7 years old, was born in Southampton, Hampshire and is a Scholar.

By the time of the 1901 census, she appears in her parents household, now at 33 Melbourne Street, Southampton. Whilst her mother's names are recorded in full, our subject is recorded as simply Annie. She is now 17 years old and again her place of birth is given as Southampton, Hampshire. The household is completed by her younger brother.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of William POTHECARY and Elizabeth Ann REEVES during the fourth quarter of 1904 in the Southampton Registration District.
The known children of William Pothecary and Elizabeth Ann (nee REEVES) are
  1. Doris May Pothecary, b.reg 1905
  2. William George Pothecary, b.reg 1911
The birth of each child was registered in the Southampton Registration District and in each case the GRO Index notes the mother's maiden name as Reeves.

On the 1911 census Elizabeth appears in the household of her husband William Pothecary at 20 Marine Parade, Southampton, along with their daughter Doris May. Elizabeth reports she is 27 years old, has been married for 6 years and has had one child, who is then surviving.

The Pothecary family had moved to 24 Melbourne Street, some time prior to the compilation of the Kelly's Street Directory of Southampton for 1925.

When the 1939 Register was compiled in September 1939, Elizabeth and William are the only residents listed at 24 Melbourne Street.

FreeBMD notes the death of Elizabeth A Pothecary during the fourth quarter of 1940 in Southampton Registration District, age 51.

Elizabeth Ann Pothecray and her husband William Pothecary were killed during the German Luftwaffe attach on Southampton on the 26 September 1940. Her death is recorded as a Civilian Casualty by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

Research Notes

(1) On the 26 September 1940, the German Luftwaffe mounted a bombing attach on the Supermarine factory in Woolston, which was building Spitfires. It was located just across the River Itchen from St Mary's. A number of bombs missed their intended targets and there were two explosions on Melbourne Street. One killed the occupants of the four adjoining dwellings, 22 to 25 Melbourne Street. Both Elizabeth Ann Pothecray and her husband William Pothecary were killed at number 24. Their married daughter Doris May Dunford and grandson Michael J Dunford perished at number 23.
