In 1860 after the death of her parents, Elizabeth and her siblings are recorded in the census of that year in the home of probate court judge A. Venard in Pleasant Grove, Greenwood, Kansas Territory.

In 1868, Elizabeth Reeves married John L. Carter in Wilson County, Kansas. He died on 13 Mar 1870 in Woodson County, Kansas based upon photos of his extant gravestone. After his death, in 1871 she married his brother nephew David Franklin Carter in McDonald County, Missouri.

Elizabeth and David Franklin Carter with their family migrated westward where they are recorded in the 1880 census in Tulare County, California. In 1892, David is recorded as a registered voter there.
