Narrative

Ernest Stanworth REEVES is the fifth known child of William Adey REEVES and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee ADEY). His birth was recorded during the first quarter of 1866 in the Bristol Registration District when his mother's maiden name was recorded as ADEY. He was the first of their children not to have been born in Hampshire. He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Paul, Bedminster, Somerset. See Research Note 1 below.

On the 1871 census, Ernest is living in his parent's household at Greenway Road, Tranmere, Cheshire. He is five years of age, a scholar, who was born at Bristol, Gloucestershire

At the time of the 1881 census, Ernest is again to be found in his parent's household at the same address. He is now 15 years old and again is shown as being born at Bristol, Gloucestershire and he remains a scholar.

On the 1891 census, Ernest is still living with his parents, who have now moved to Rose Mount, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Ernest is now working as a Merchant's Clerk. His age and place of birth are consistent with prior census returns.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Ernest Stanworth REEVES and Emily BURGESS during the third quarter of 1891 in the Birkenhead Registration District. They married in July of that year at the Parish Church of St Paul, Birkenhead.
The known children of Ernest Stanworth REEVES and his wife Emily (nee BURGESS) are
  1. Ernest Stanworth Adey REEVES, b.reg. 2q1892
  2. William Adey REEVES, b.reg. 1q1898
The birth of both of their sons was registered in the Birkenhead Registration District and on each occasion their mother's maiden name was recorded as BURGESS.

At the time of the 1901 census Ernest and Emily are living on Seymour Street in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Ernest is now 35 years of age. His place of birth was originally recorded as Bristol, Somerset which correlates well with Bedminster but Somerset was subsequently struck through and replaced by Gloucestershire. He is employed as a Shipbuilder's Clerk. His wife Emily is 34 and was born in Liverpool, Lancashire. Their sons, Ernest S A Reeves (age 8, born Birkenhead, Cheshire) and William A Reeves (3, Birkenhead, Cheshire) along with a servant complete the household.

On the 1911 census Ernest and family have moved to Kirkland Avenue, Birkenhead, where he spends the rest of his life. Ernest indicates he is 45 years old and was born at Bristol but does not include a county. He continues to be employed as a Shipbuilder's Clerk. Emily is now 44 years of age and her place of birth is simply Liverpool. They indicates they have been married for 19 years and that they have had two children, both of who are then still living. Both sons are still living in their parent's home; Ernest is now 18 and working as a Rubber Merchant's Clerk and William is 13 and is at School. Ernest's mother MARY Elizabeth REEVES, who is a 70 year old widow, born at Poole, Dorset, completes the household.

At the time the 1939 Register was compiled, Ernest and Emily remain at Kirkland Avenue. He indicates he is a Retired Cashier.

FreeBMD notes the death of Ernest Stanworth REEVES, age 78, during the fourth quarter of 1944 in the Birkenhead Registration District.

The index to the Probate Registry notes that in early January 1945, Emily REEVES, widow, was granted probate in Liverpool over the estate of Ernest Stanworth REEVES of Kirkland Avenue, Higher Tranmere, Birkenhead.

Research Notes

(1) Ernest was baptised at Bedminster. Historically a small town in Somerset, it is located immediately south of the River Avon, with the City of Bristol then on the northern bank. The River Avon formed the county boundary between Somerset and Gloucestershire. Administrative boundaries have subsequently evolved.
