Narrative

George is almost certainly the son of George Reeves and Elizabeth who was baptised on 22 May 1808 at Kings Somborne, Hampshire. Nothing is known of George's early life.

George Reeves and Elizabeth Holdaway were married on 21 Aug 1831 also at Kings Somborne. There are other known links between the Reeves and Holdaway families of this locality.

All of the above baptisms were at the Parish Church of St Andrew, Mottisfont.

George, Elizabeth and their first five children appear on the June 1841 census in the Mottisfont parish area.

On the March 1851 census, George plus wife Elizabeth and their first nine children are living on SpearyWell Road, Mottisfont. George is 41 years old and born Kings Somborne

By the 1861 census, George plus wife Elizabeth are shown with John, William, George, Emily Charles, Henry, Thomas and Sabina. Rebecca married James Tanner in 1858 and is living next door, still at Speary Well Road in Mottisfont. George is now 51 years old, but claiming birth at Brook in Hampshire. Note the family is enumerated as REAVES (sic) but there are no other known instances of this surname variant being used.

On the 1871 census, George plus wife Elizabeth are shown with John, George, Charles, Henry, Thomas and Sabina. Rebecca is still living in an adjacent property on Speary Well Road in Mottisfont. George is now 62 and again claiming birth at Brook Hampshire.

On all four census returns George is shown as an Agricultural Labourer or simply as a Labourer (in 1861).

By the 1881 census wife Elizabeth is the head of household and a widow. FreeBMD has an appropriate death registration for a George Reeves, age 67 in the adjacent Stockbridge Registration District.

Brook is a hamlet two miles distant from the village of Kings Somborne and a part of the Parish of the same name.
