George Reeves Oldest Man in Pomona is Dead
Was Remarkably Active Aged Man Till the Past Few Days
George Reeves, a resident of Pomona for thirty years, and the oldest male resident in Pomona, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. N. Burritt, in Los Angeles, last night. He had been in his usual fine health and vigor for one of almost ninety-three years, up to two weeks ago today, when he met with an accident that resulted in his death. He was in his garden at his home at 160 Illinois street, when he tripped over a wire and fell heavily on his shoulders. He was helped to the house and put to bed. His daughter, Mrs. Burritt, was called from Los Angeles. The next day Mrs. Burritt took her aged father in an automobile to her home in Los Angeles.
But Mr. Burritt (sic) never recovered from his fall. He was apparently in good spirits yesterday morning, but as the day progressed he sank rapidly to his death.
The funeral will be held at the First Methodist church next Sunday at 2:30 p. m. The body will be buried in Pomona cemetery at the side of the wife and son, who died here long ago.
Mr. Reeves leaves a son, Charles, and a daughter, Mrs. Burritt, in Los Angeles, besides many grandchildren. He was born in England, May 27, 1822, and would have been ninety-three years of age had he lived until next May. He was a wonderfully vigorous old gentleman. He was able to plow and cultivate at the age of eighty-nine. He was an active farmer long past his eighty years. He was down town and went about errands till the day of his accident, and he was a good letter writer and great reader till his accident laid him low.
Since boyhood in England Mr. Reeves was a devout Methodist. He was never absent from Sunday worship except when kept home by disability.
Death Certificate names father as William Reeves.
It appear he and William Reeves came together to New York on the ship Margaret Evans in 1848. William is listed as 23, and George as 26. They are likely brothers. They also appear to both be living in the same household in 1850 in Winnebago County.
