Narrative

The first positive identification of this individual is from the 1851 census, on 30 March, when George was living at the Cutters Arms Inn on Carisbrooke Street in Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight. His age is recorded as 34 and his occupation is given as "Servant (formerly a Smith)". His place of birth is recorded as "Wiltshire, Redbrick" which is possibly a mis-transcription of Redlinch/Redlynch in Wiltshire which, coincidentally, was a place of brick manufacture.

George has not been positively identified on the 1861 census.

On the 1871 census, George was living at 28 Hearn Street in Newport on the Isle of Wight. He was working as a Master Farrier (employing one man). He was 54 years old and claims birth at Downton in Wiltshire. Redlynch is a hamlet adjacent to Downton. Along with George, the household comprises wife Sarah (age 33), daughter Ada M (7) and sons George(5) plus Frederick (3). The births of all three children are recorded in the IoW Family History Society's Birth Index and all three indicate a mother's maiden name of Perry.

FreeBMD has only one strongly matching marriage entry (between 1851 & 1871) for George Reeves and a spouse with surname Perry and that occurs in the March quarter of 1862 in the Pancras Registration District of Middlesex. On marriage Sarah is recorded as Sarah Eleanor PERRY.

Known children of George Reeves and Sarah Eleanor Reeves (nee PERRY) are
  1. Ada Mary Reeves, b 1863, d 1874
  2. George William Reeves, b 1865, fl 1871
  3. Frederick Arthur Reeves, b c1867, d 1936
  4. Walter Perry Reeves, b 1871, fl 1901
  5. Amy Thirza Reeves, b 1874, fl 1901
with all the above births registered in the Newport Registration Sub-District of the Isle of Wight.

At the time of the 1881 census, George is living as a lodger in the lodging house run by Ann Warren & her brother Charles at 28 Peel Street, Kensington, Middlesex. He is now age 64 and working as a Blacksmith. The census records he is a widower and the IoW FHS death indices note the death of Sarah Eleanor REEVES in 1878 in the Newport Registration Sub-District of the Isle of Wight. The family have become separated. Frederick was in Carisbrooke and Amy in Islington, Middlesex; sons George & Walter have yet to be found on the 1881 census.

George has not been identified on the 1891 or subsequent census returns.
