Narrative

Nothing is presently known of George's early life, but 1851 and 1861 census returns are consistent that he was born in Waldron, Sussex. He was a little more fluid with his age, but he was most probably born around 1782.

The marriage of George REEVES to Lucy STONESTREET during September 1799 at the Parish Church of St Bartholomew, Burwash, Sussex is noted in the records of FamilySearch. This entry suggests his father's name was John REEVES.

The probable children of George Reeves and his wife Lucy (nee STONESTREET) are
  1. Richard REEVES, bapt December 1799, Heathfield, Sussex
  2. George REEVES, bapt December 1804, Mayfield, Sussex
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, George and Lucy Reeves appear in the household of John BAKER whose occupation is shown as Land Agent at Mount Pleasant, in Mayfield, Sussex. George is noted as being 55 years old and that he was born in county (that is to say, in Sussex). George's occupation is shown as a Male Servant and Lucy's as a Female Servant.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, George and Lucy are living at Five Ashes in the parish of Mayfield, Sussex. George is now 65 years old (probably understated) and claims birth in Waldron, Sussex. His occupation is Agricultural Labourer His wife Lucy is 72 and was born in nearby Heathfield, Sussex.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows George as a Lodger again at Five Ashes, Mayfield, Sussex. He is a 79 year old widower and again claims birth in Waldron, Sussex. His occupation is shown as Agricultural Labourer. George is specifically enumerated as "George Reeves Senr" and is the only individual on this schedule. Sharing the same dwelling, but enumerated on the previous schedule is a "George Reeves Junr" and his wife Charlotte and their three sons. Although George senior's relationship is shown as Lodger, it is strongly suspected he is the father of George Reeves junior.

George has not been identified on the 1871 census. FreeBMD notes the death of a George Reeves, during the second quarter of 1863 in the Uckfield Registration District. This would correlate with a burial noted by FamilySearch of George Reeves, age 81, at the Parish Church of St Mark the Evangelist, Hadlow Down, Sussex

Research Notes

(1) It is probable that George's wife Lucy died in late 1854. FreeBMD has a death registration for Lucy Reeves during the fourth quarter of that year and FamilySearch has a matching burial record in December 1854 at the Parish Church of St Mark the Evangelist, Hadlow Down for a Lucy Reeves, aged 77.
