Narrative

Herbert Adey REEVES is the second of seven known children born to William Adey REEVES and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee ADEY). His birth was recorded during the fourth quarter of 1859 in the Alverstoke Registration District when his mother's maiden name was recorded as ADEY. He was baptised in March 1860 at the Parish Church of St John, Portsea.

At the time of the 1861 census Herbert is living in his parent's household at 41 High Street, Alverstoke, Hampshire. He is shown as being 1 year old and that he was born at Gosport in Hampshire.

On the 1871 census Herbert is missing from his parent's home. He, along with his older brother William Henry REEVES, are pupils at St Saviours College in Ardingly, Sussex. He is 11 years old and his place of birth is given as Gosport, Hampshire.

A decade later and the 1881 census shows Herbert again living with his parents William and Mary now at 3 Greenway Road, Tranmere, Cheshire. He is 21 years of age, was born at Gosport, Hampshire and is working as a Commercial Clerk for a Ship Builder.

On the 1891 census, Herbert is still living with his parents, now at 14 Rose Mount, Birkenhead. His age and place of birth remain consistent and he is working as a Cashier.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Herbert Adey REEVES and Fanny MARSH in the Marlborough Registration District of Wiltshire during the first quarter of 1892.

All three births were registered in the Birkenhead Registration District and on each occasion the mother's maiden name was given as MARSH.

By the time of the 1901 census Herbert and Fanny are living at 27 Balls Road, Birkenhead in Cheshire. Herbert is now 41 years old and again claims birth in Gosport, Hampshire. He works as a Ship Builder's Cashier. His wife Fanny is 34 years of age and was born at Maddington, Wiltshire. Their daughters Edith Adey REEVES (8, Birkenhead, Cheshire) and Norah Winifred REEVES (2, Birkenhead, Cheshire) along with two servants complete the household.

On the 1911 census Herbert and Fanny are living at the same address on Balls Road, Birkenhead. He is now 51 and again claims birth at Gosport, Hampshire. He is now working as a Cashier for a Ship Repairer. Fanny is now 45 years old and they have been married for 19 years and have had three children who are all then alive. Living with them are their daughters Ethel Adey REEVES (18, single, born Birkenhead, Cheshire, with no occupation recorded), Norah Winifred REEVES (12, Birkenhead, Cheshire who attends School) and Frances Doreen REEVES who is just one year old and was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. A single general servant completes the household.

The death of Herbert's wife, Fanny, was registered during the third quarter of 1929 in the Birkenhead Registration District. She was 63 years old.

The GRO Index notes the death of Herbert Adey REEVES during the first quarter of 1933 in Birkenhead Registration District. He was 73 years old; a good match for our subject.
