Hiram and Cathrine (sic) Rives (sic) appear on the 1850 census at Lafayette in Walker County, Georgia. Hiram indicates he is 23 years old and was born in South Carolina. Cathrine is 18 years old (so born c1832) in Georgia. Two children, Lucinda (age 2) and John (aged 9 months), both born in Georgia, complete the household in dwelling 981.

In 1860, Hiram and Catherine Reaves (sic) appear on the census in Chestnut Flat, Walker County, Georgia. Hiram was age 37, born in Georgia (so about 1823). Household included Catherine (29), Lucinda (12), John H. (10), Mary P. (8), Sarah J. (6), Frances C. (4), and Nancy E. (1).

Hiram and Catherine Reaves (sic) appear 1870 census in Canton Beat (later known as Omen) Smith County, Texas. He claims he is 49 years old, so born around 1821, and was born in Georgia. The household includes nine children ranging in age from 20 to 1, all of whom were born in Georgia. This suggests the family had moved to Texas from Georgia within the past year or so.

Hiram's wife Catherine died in 1873, aged 43 in Smith County, Texas. See Research Note 2 below.

Hiram Reeves married secondly Lucinda Sweeney on 22 December 1878 in Smith County, Texas, with the entry recorded in the County Marriage Records on 29 January 1879. Note however, on the 1900 census in adjacent Van Zandt County, they claim to have been married only 20 years.

In 1880, "Hyrom" Reeves was living in Van Zandt County, Texas, age 53, born in Georgia, with both parents born in Georgia. With him is wife Lucinda J. (43), and children Carrie (20), Joseph (18), David (12), Allen (10), and Sidnia/Sidma? (8).

Hiram and Lucinda appear on the 1900 census in Justice Precinct 6 of Van Zandt County, Texas. He claims to be 77 years old and that he was born in Georgia. He gave his month and year of birth as December 1823. He indicates both his parents were born in South Carolina. The census also notes Lucinda is 66 years old, being born in January 1834 and has five children, all surviving at that time. See Research Note 3 below.

Research Notes

(1) Trying to determine Hiram's parents. The 1880 census says they were born in GA, but the 1900 census says they were born in SC. No names are given.

Unfortunately there are two Hiram Reeves born in Georgia about the same time and they are blended together on various trees in Ancestry and FamilySearch. I am hoping someone can help me sort this out!

(2) Find A Grave provides details of a grave marker for a Catharine (sic) Reeves who died on November, 28 1873, age 43. She is interred in Whitehouse Cemetery, Smith County, Texas.   See Find A Grave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/40318801/catharine-reeves

(3) The 1900 census shows Lucinda is 66 years old. so she was around 45 years old when she and Hiram married in December 1878. This makes it is unlikely any of her children are Hiram's. She was enumerated on the 1870 census, as Lucinda Swinney (sic), in Garden Valley Beat. Smith Co., Texas as a widow with five children.
