Jabez REEVES is the third of seven known children born to Albert George REEVES and his wife Martha (nee ARNOLD). His birth was registered as Jabez Reeves during the third quarter of 1840 in the Shaftesbury (Dorset) Registration District. The date of birth comes from his US Death Certificate.
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Jabez Reeves appears in the household of his paternal grandfather Albinus REEVES at Motcombe, Dorset. Although this census does not identify relationships, this extended household appears to include his grandmother Lydia, his uncle Josiah, his cousin Alfred as well as his mother Martha and his elder sister Mary Ann and elder brother James. Jabez is shown as being 1 year old.
It is likely that Jabez and his family moved from Motcombe in Dorset to the Abergavenny area of Monmouthshire between July 1845 and September 1848. See Research Note 2 below.
At the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Jabez appears in the household of his parents Albert George and Martha REEVES on Augusta Street, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire. Jabez is ten years old, his place of birth is given as Motcombe, Dorset and he is working as a labourer at the Coal Works.
Neither Jabez nor his parents and siblings have yet been identified on the 1861 census of England and Wales. (As at September 2018) His parents have been identified on the 1871 census in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire.
According to information included on the 1901 census records, Jabez A. Reeves immigrated from England to the United States in 1865 and his wife Mary immigrated from Wales in 1864.
Research Notes
(1) Whilst many online resources refer to this individual as Jabez Albinas Reeves, the earliest reference to a second given name seems to be the 1910 US Census, where he is recorded as Jabez A Reeves. All the English and Welsh source show him as simple Jabez Reeves. The 1851 census is particularly telling as his father and youngest brother are shown with two given names, but Jabez and his other brothers with only one. As late as the 1880 US census, he is simply referred to as Jabez Reeves. The Tuscarawas County Record of Births (available at FamilySearch) for his children Lloyd, Latimer, Louisa in 1888, 1892 and 1894 have some fluidity in the spelling of his given name, but in all instances there is no second given name or initial.
(2) The birth of his younger brother Jeremiah was registered during 3q1845 in the Shaftesbury (Dorset) Registration District and that of Frederick during 3q1848 in the Abergavenny (Monmouthshire) Registration District.
