Narrative
James is the seventh of eleven known children of William and Jane Reeves. He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Margaret, Hinton Waldrist, Berkshire in May 1827.On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, James, along with five siblings appears in his parent's household in Hinton (Waldrist), Berkshire. His age is shown as 15 and he was born in county; that is to say in Berkshire.
The marriage of James REEVES and Eliza PAINTON was registered during the first quarter of 1849 in Faringdon Registration District.
The known children of James Reeves and Eliza (nee PAINTON) are
- Bridford Reeves, b.reg. 1849
- Caleb Reeves, b.reg. 1851
- Sarah Reeves, b.reg. 1855
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, James and his family have been enumerated under the surname REVES (sic) in the village of Longworth, Berkshire. He is 22 years old and claims birth in the neighbouring parish/village of Hinton. He is employed as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife Eliza and their children Bridford, there are two visitors in the household; Richard (aged 32) and Bartholomew (4) PAINTON. Their relationship to Eliza is not presently known; see Research Note 1 below.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows James and Eliza have move to Hinton Waldrist, Berkshire. James is now 34 years old, claims birth in Hinton and is working as an Agricultural Labourer. His wife and three children complete the household.
On the 1871 census James and wife Eliza are again to be found in Hinton Waldrist, Berkshire. James's age is indistinct due to subsequent annotations to the enumeration schedule, but is most probably 44. He was born in Hinton, Berkshire and is working as an Agricultural Labourer. His wife and son Bridford complete the household. Enumerated on a separate schedule, but sharing the same dwelling is Alfred Reeves, who is described as a Lodger. Again the age is not easily read due to the subsequent annotations.
By the time of the 1881 census James is a widower. His wife Eliza's death was registered during the second quarter of the previous year. He is 50 years old, was born in Hinton and is working as an Agricultural Labourer. Alfred Reeves (age 56) is again enumerated on a separate schedule, but is sharing the dwelling with James and is described as a Lodger. Based on Alfred's age and place of birth, it is likely this is James's older brother.
The marriage of James REEVES and Emma PRESTON was registered during the second quarter of 1881 in the Faringdon Registration District. See Research Note 2 below.
The known children of James Reeves and Emma (formerly Preston, nee JUDD) are
- Emily Reeves, b.reg. 1881
- Harry Reeves, b.reg. 1884
- George Reeves, b.reg. 1887
- Albert Reeves, b.reg. 1889
On the 1891 census, James and his wife Emma are living in Hinton Waldrist. James has been economical with his age at 59 years, claims birth in Hinton Waldrist and is working as a Farm Labourer. In addition to his wife Emma (44), the household comprises his stepson Frederick PRESTON (18), daughter Emily REEVES (9) and their sons Harry (6), George (4) and Albert (1).
At the time of the 1901 census James and Emma are again to be found in Hinton Waldrist. James now claims to be 75 years old and that he was born in Hinton Waldrist. He is working as a Farm Labourer. Stepson Frederick and sons Harry, George and Albert are living in the parental home.
On the 1911 census, James and Emma are still living in Hinton Waldrist. Although James is named as Head of Household, the form has been signed by Emma. She indicates that James is 84 years old, was born in Hinton Waldrist and is a Labourer on Farm. She notes that they have been married 30 years and that there were five children born to the marriage, four of whom are still surviving.
FreeBMD notes two death registration in the Faringdon Registration District, either of which might fit this James. The first is in 1q1913 aged 88 and the second in 2q1915 aged 87.
Research Notes
(1) It is not believed that Richard PAINTON was Eliza's brother, but that they were more loosely related. Eliza (bapt Longworth Feb 1826) was the daughter of William and Elizabeth PAINTON. Richard was either the son of James & Martha PAINTON (bapt Nov 1813) or of Richard and Elisabeth (bapt June 1814).(2) Emma PRESTON is believed to be the widow of George PRESTON whose marriage to Emma JUDD was recorded during the second quarter of 1867 in Faringdon Registration District. Emma appears on the 1871 census at her parents home, she is married but her husband is not at the same address.
From census returns it appears probable that George & Emma had at two children, Alice b.reg. in 1q1869 and Frederick b. about 1873. It has not been possible so far to easily disambiguate Frederick George (3q1871), Frederick (2q1872) and Frederick John (2q1873) whose births were each registered in the Faringdon Registration District which includes Longworth. He is not Frederick John, since both he and our Frederick have been identified on the 1911 census.
Emma Preston along with Alice (12) and Frederick (6) appears on the 1881 census in Longworth. (RG11, Piece 1279, Folio 125 face, Page 15.) She is a widow. There is a death registration for George PRESTON age 28 during the second quarter of 1876 in Faringdon Reg.Dist. which would fit this situation.
