Details of James's early life have yet to be established with any degree of certainty.

James REEVE married Elizabeth SHAW in June 1831 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Both made their mark in the marriage register. Elizabeth (nee PICKERING) was the widow of John SHAW by whom she had two surviving sons, John (c1826 - ) and William (c1828 - ).
The known children of James Reeve and Elizabeth (formerly Shaw, nee PICKERING) are

3. Maria Reeves, born c1836
4. Robert Reeve, born 1839
5. Edward Reeve, born 1841

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, James Reves is living on South Street in the civil parish of Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He is 44 years old and was NOT born in county (that is to say not in Derbyshire). He is employed as a Coal Miner. In addition to his wife Elizabeth (age 40 and also not born in Derbyshire), the household comprises, John Shaw (15, a Coal Miner), William Shaw (12, also a Coal Miner), Sarah Reeves (sic, 10), Joseph Reeves, Maria Reeves (10) and Robert Reeves (3). All of the children were born in county (Derbyshire)

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, James and his wife Elizabeth Reeve are living in the hamlet and Ecclesiastical Parish of Riddings, Derbyshire. James is 52 years old and gives his place of birth as Alsworth (sic Awsworth), Nottinghamshire. He is again employed as a Coal Miner. The household now comprise just their children Joseph (17, a Coal Miner), Maria (15), Robert (11, a Coal Miner) and Edward (9, a Scholar).

A decade later and the 1861 census shows James Reeves and Elizabeth still living in the hamlet of Riddings, James is now 60 years old, gives his place of birth as Awsworth in Nottinghamshire. He is now described as a Labourer. Their sons Robert Reeves (age 21, a Coal Miner) and Edward Reeves (19, also a Coal Miner) complete their household. See Research Note 2 below.

James has not been identified on the 1871 census. His widow Elizabeth is head of household. The death of a James Reeves, aged 70, was recorded during the third quarter of 1867 in the Belper Registration District. There was a burial of a James REEVES during August 1867 at the Parish Church of St James, Riddings. The burial register notes James aged 70 and described as being of Riddings.

Research Notes

(1)   A credible baptism for James Reeve born c1799 at Awsworth, Nottinghamshire has yet to be identified. At FamilySearch this individual is associated with baptisms in London, which are not felt to be credible.

(2)   On the 1861 census, the next schedule, sharing the same dwelling place, is for Samuel HURT (head of household, age 23, married and a Labourer) and Edwin (sic) HURT (son, age 1). (RG9, Piece 2515, Folio 88 face, Page 5, Schedule 21)
Samuel HURT is the first husband of James's daughter Maria and Edwin her son, whose birth was registered as Edward REEVE during first quarter 1860, with no mother's maiden name recorded.
Maria HURT (nee Reeves) has yet to be identified on the 1861 census, but is known to be living at this time
