He appears as Rev. James F. Reeves in Atlanta City Directories from 1879 to 1883. In 1879, he was shown as a travelling agent living at 76 1/2 Whitehall, while son Larkin H. Reeves was shown as a clerk living at 78 1/2 Whitehall. He may be the Rev. James F. Reeves who appeared in the 1887 Jacksonville, Florida, City Directory.

Rev. James F. Reeves died 29 June 1901 in Wadley, Jefferson Co., GA; he was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA. Two reports of his death were published in the Atlanta Constitution dated 29 June 1901. One invited Reeves's Masonic brethren to attend his funeral. His obituary described him as a Baptist minister and noted that he was a "one of the pioneer citizens of Atlanta." His obituary noted that he was an uncle "of J. R. Little, of this City." The obituary notes that Reeves's wife died about four years earlier and was buried in Oakland Cemetery "by the side of her nine children. Her husband, who died Thursday, was the only surviving member of the family." His burial record states that he was seventy years old.
