His will mentions property being kept together until his children come of age. William Simpson was the administrator. In addition to the above children, there is a Frances Reeves, b. c1843 listed in the household with Mary in 1850 and 1860. Since James died in 1840, this could not be his child.

His headstone states he died the 27th. Probate records indicate the 26th.

Death has again visited our land, and consigned to the tomb an honorable citizen - JAS. H. REEVES - who emigrated from Georgia, and was for many years a citizen of this county. He was a man highly esteemed and admired for his undoubted integrity by all who knew him. As a neighbor he was open and free - as a citizen - as a creditor indulgent - as a debtor punctual. He manifested great fortitude and patience during his illness, which lasted only seven days, and without a murmur resigned all into the hands of God. He was exceedingly amiable and unassuming in disposition, warm and ardent in his attachments, affable and affectionate as a husband - a kind father and relative - beloved by all who knew him. He was in the thirty-fifth year of his age. Twelve years of that time he was a worthy and agreeable member of the Baptist Church and as well in death as in life he gave the strongest evidence of his love to his Redeemer by his gentle submission to the will of God and his unblemished piety through life, under all circumstances. He was friendly and feeling in conversation, and well calculated to make every one happy around him. He left a very dear and affectionate wife, six children, and many other relatives to lament their irreparable loss; and in his last and dying moments, he said to his wife and children, - Relatives and friends, do not lament after me; I am sensible that I am going from this transitory world to another far superior, where happiness and bliss dwelleth forever more. And in connection with this, he quoted these passages of scripture: "I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand; I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not me only, but unto them also that love his appearing."
