At the age of 20, on 23 Sep 1861, James P. Reeves enlised as a Corporal in Co. C, 8th Regiment Kentucky Infantry of the Union forces in the Civil War. He was captured in a battle before Murfreesboro on 31 Dec 1863 and was a prisoner of war.

After the Civil War, in 1866, he married Jaley Cox of Estill County, Kentucky and resided there until around 1900 when he is listed in the census that year in Richmond City, Madison County, Kentucky. His profession is listed as physician.
