Narrative

The birth of James William REEVES is noted by FreeBMD has having been registered during the second quarter of 1839 in the Holborn Registration District. The more modern GRO Index records his name as James Williams REEVES and indicates his mother's maiden name was GILES

James is first found on the English 1841 census with his parents and elder siblings living in Hatton Garden, (London), Middlesex as a 2 year old.

On the 1851 census James is living in the parental home at 20 Hertford Street in the St Pancras area of London, where he is now the only child.

FreeBMD notes James Williams REEVES married Esther Starling ASH during the December quarter of 1857. They were married in early October 1857 at St Pancras Old Church, St Pancras, London (Middlesex).
The known children of James William REEVES and his wife Esther Starling (nee ASH) are
  1. Esther REEVES, born c1859
  2. James William REEVES, b.reg. 2q1861, Pancras Reg. Dist.
  3. Alice Eliza REEVES, b.reg. 3q1864, Pancras Reg. Dist.
  4. Caroline REEVES, b.reg. 3q1866, Islington Reg. Dist.
  5. Henry John REEVES, b.reg. 3q1869, Islington Reg. Dist.
  6. Albert Edward REEVES, born Feb 1872, Ontario
  7. Jane Elizabeth REEVES, born Oct 1876, Ontario
  8. Charles Christopher REEVES, born Sep 1877, Ontario
  9. Frances Herbert REEVES, born Sep 1879, Ontario

On the 1861 census James along with his wife Esther and daughter Esther are living on Grafton Road In Kentish Town, Middlesex. James is 23 years old, claims birth at St Andrews. Middlesex and is working as a Plumber and Glazier

In May 1870, James with his wife Esther and children Esther M., James, Alice, Caroline & infant Henry arrive at Quebec, Canada aboard the SS Nestorian from Liverpool, family group 41542, see 18700510_Passenger_List_SS_Nestorian.
The SS Nestorian left Liverpool on 28 April 1870, called at Londonderry and arrived Quebec 10 May 1870 - see http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=nesto

At the time of the 1871 Canadian Census on 2 April 1871, James and his family had moved to Ontario province and they were living in London, Ontario. He gives his age as 32 and states he (and his family) were born in England.

The births of four additional children are recorded between 1872-1879 in records for London, Ontario. However, James & family have not, as yet, been identified on the Census of Canada for 1881.

It is highly probable that James, Esther and their family moved to Chicago around 1885-1888. They are recorded on the 1900 US Federal Census at 971 Adams Street, Chicago. James and Esther claim 30 years residence in the USA, which would coincide with their arrival in Canada. Their son Charles claims only 12 years, arriving in 1888 whilst on the following page (for the same household) four other children (Frank, Frederick, Alice & Jennie) claim 15 years residence arriving in 1885.

James' died on 30 August 1917 at 3926 Congress (St), in Chicago. The death is registered in Chicago by Charles Reeves of Wadsworth, Illinois. He gives his father's date of birth as May 5, 1839 in England and that his father's father was William Reeves and that James was a Painter by occupation.
