Per Matthew Hall, and it the HALL & REEVES Family Storybook starting pg. 74:
Suffered from pneumonia when young. One of his lungs collapsed and his chest grew in a deformed manner. His younger brother, George, cared for him.

The 1880 census indicates he was born Jan 1880. The above date may be a blending with another brother, William, who also appears on the 1880 census.
