Around 1827, Hardin and Jennie Reeves Burton migrated to Indiana, settling near Bloomfield in Greene County. Her father, William Reeves, had also migrated to Greene County, Indiana. In the 1830 census they are recorded there, living within a few households of her brother, John Reeves.

After Jennie's death around 1830, Hardin Burton with their children moved to Independence County, Indiana where many other members of the Burton family were living and remarried. He was initially a farmer, but in 1843 he was licensed to preach and two years later was ordained a minister of the Baptist Church.

Research

Although there are no primary source documents which prove that Jennie Reeves was the daughter of William Reeves, there is enough inferential data to lead to that conclusion. Hardin Burton was obviously closely involved with the family of William Reeves for he signed as witness to several deeds. In 1820 William Reeves sold 200 acres in Ashe County NC to Hardin Burton as he had to other sons-in-laws, Allen and William Burton. [DB F:516]

The History of Greene County, Indiana, Chapter XV - Beech Creek Township records William Reeves as "Among other pioneers whose name deserves a place in the history of the township". The fact that other daughters with their Burton husbands also followed William Reeves and other Burton family members to Indiana adds to the inferential data that connects Hardin Burton to this family. The inscription on the gravestone of her sister Obedience Reeves Burton in the Burton Cemetery in Lawrence County, Indiana includes the name of her parents, William & Ann Reves. There is a "Hardy" Burton recorded in the 1830 census of Greene County, Indiana in the same neighborhood with John & William Reeves but it is unclear whether this is actually Hardin Burton but probably is since he is not found in Lawrence County with other Burton family members..
