Narrative

Jeremiah REEVES is the fifth of seven known children of Albert George REEVES and his wife Martha (nee ARNOLD). His birth was registered during the third quarter of 1845 in the Shaftesbury Registration District (which included the parish of Motcombe, Dorset.) The GRO Index to Births shows he was registered simply as Jeremiah Reeves; there is no middle name(s). His mother's maiden name was recorded as ARNOLD. See Research Note 1 below.

By the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Jeremiah and his parents had relocated to Bedwellty, Monmouthshire in South Wales. They are enumerated on Wains Row, Manmoel.   Jeremiah was 5 years old, born at Motcombe, Dorset and was a Scholar.

On the 1861 census Jeremiah Reeves appears as a Lodger in the household of Tom W CRIPPS (no known family relationship) on Albert Street in Llanofer, Monmouthshire. He is now 16 years old and claims birth in Motcombe, Dorset. He is employed as a Forge Puddler.

A record of the marriage of Jeremiah and Jane REES has yet to be identified. See Research Note 2 below.

Children of Jeremiah E. Reeves and Jane Rees:
  1. Samuel Reeves, b. c1871
  2. Martha Louisa? Reeves, b. c1875
  3. William John Reeves, b. 10 May 1878
  4. Agnes Reeves, b. c1882
  5. Lillian Reeves, b. 5 Mar 1883
In 1870, a John RIEVES (sic) is listed as head of a household in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He is 25 years old and born in England. There are no relationships shown on this census, but the following entries are for Jane RIEVES (age 23 and born in Wales, his wife) and a John (sic) RIEVES (age 27 and born in England). Based on age and place of birth this John Rieves is a good match to Jeremiah's brother Jonathan REEVES who was born a couple of years prior to Jeremiah.

In 1880, Jery (35) was living in Niles, Trumbull County, Ohio with wife Jane (33) and children Samuel (9) and Martha (5).

In 1900, he was in Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, listed as age 54, born Jun 1845 in England. With him are daughters Louisa (24), Agnes (18), and Lillian (17). Servant Henry Malone (28) and hostlers Ida Malone (23) and Chas Bond (34) are also with them.

His passport application from Tuscarawas County, Ohio, dated 18 Jun 1919 states he was born in Dorsetshire England on 23 Jun 1845, the son of George Reeves who was then dead. He emigrated to the US from Liverpool about 29 Nov 1867.

Research Notes

(1) The birth of Jeremiah's two younger brothers were both registered in the Abergavenny Registration District of Monmouthshire in Wales, the first during 3q1848. It is likely that the family moved from Dorset to Monmouthshire sometime before before Jeremiah was three years of age. His parents remained in Monmouthshire, appearing there on the 1871 census. Jeremiah therefore spent most of his growing years in South Wales.

(2) Jane Reeves also applied for a US Passport at the same time has her husband in 1919. Her application form shows her father's name as David REES.   See FamilySearch

(3) The birth of Jeremiah's sons William John and Lillie are listed in Ohio birth records.

(4) A picture and some biographical details are contained on a website about the Reeves Victorian Home he bought in 1898.
