Narrative

Nothing is presently known of John's early life.     John Reeves, the son of William & Mary REEVES was baptised at the Parish Church of St Giles, Blendworth on 15 February 1818.

John Reeves and Ann Neller were married on 17 September 1841 at Catherington in Hampshire, close to where they were both born (Blendworth & Clanfield respectively). The marriage register notes that John's father was William REEVES, a wheelwright and Ann's father was Robert NELLER, a Labourer.

There are seven known children from the 1851 & 1861 census returns
  1. Henry George Reeves born about 1844 in Headley, Hants
  2. John Reeves born about 1846 in South Stoneham, Hants
  3. Harriet Reeves born about 1849 in Eling, Hants
  4. Annie Elizabeth Reeves, born 1852 in Eling, Hants
  5. Mary Ann Reeves, born 1853 in Eling, Hants
  6. Jane Reeves, born about 1858 in Andover, Hants
  7. Walter Reeves, born 1859 in Andover, Hants
At the time of the 1841 census John is living in Headley (in the east of the county, close to the Surrey border), working as a Police Constable. This is where his first child was born three years later.

By the time of the 1851 census John, Ann and three children are living in Totton, in the northern part of Eling parish, where they remain until around 1855.

By the 1861 census, John has been promoted to Sergeant and the family are now living in Andover, where John and Ann remain for the 1871 & 1881 censuses.

John has not be found on the 1891 census and his wife Ann is shown as being a widow. FreeBMD has a strong candidate entry for John's death registration in Andover Registration District during the March 1885 quarter, aged 67

Research Notes

(1)     John, Ann & family lived for less than ten years in the Eling area of the New Forest. They did however baptise at least three children at Eling Parish church. Family Search also lists an Edward Reeves, son of John & Ann Reeves baptised 10 June 1855, but there is presently no additional information which links this child to this John and his wife Ann.
