Narrative
John Reeves, the son of John Reeves and Mary (nee Rose) was baptised at the Parish Church of St Leonard, Sherfield English in Hampshire on 8 February 1823. He was the eldest of twelve probable siblings.
John married Emma KEMISH on 29 July 1847 also at the Parish Church of St Leonard, Sherfield English.
Known children of John Reeves & Emma (nee Kemish) are ....
- Clara Augusta Reeves, bapt December 1848 at the Parish Church of St Leonard, Sherfield English, Hampshire.
- John Walter Reeves, born about January 1851.
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John appears in a family context, with his parents John & Mary along with six younger brothers and sisters at Sherfield English, Hampshire. His father's occupation is given as a Game Keeper and this John is shown as aged 15 and born in county (Hampshire), but he has no occupation given.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John is living with his wife Emma and their two children at East End in the parish of Boldre, Hampshire. John claims he was born in Sherfield English, Hampshire and that he is 27 years old. He was employed as a Police Constable and references to Police Constable John Reeves occur in the Hampshire Advertiser from February 1845 until January 1855.
Thus far, John has not been identified on the 1861 or subsequent census returns. It is probable that he has died as there are very good matches for his wife Emma and their daughter Clara appearing as Emma Harrison, wife of Jabes Harrison and Clara A Harrison, daughter. FreeBMD notes the marriage of an Emma Reeves to James Jabez Harrison in the second quarter of 1855 in Southampton Registration District. However, remarriage is no guarantee of a former husband's death.
